After 27 years of serving classic breakfast pastries, desserts and other treats, Cup & Saucer bakery and cafe in Hagåtña will be closing its doors permanently effective June 3.

Cup & Saucer executive chef and co-owner Veronica "Ronnie" Calvo Perez announced the artisan bakery's final days in a May 10 open letter to customers.

"After much consideration, I have made the difficult decision to retire and permanently close Cup & Saucer bakery effective June 3, 2023," Perez said in her letter, a copy of which was also posted on the bakery's glass door. "The decision to close after 27 years of serving you, getting to know you and making you a part of our Cup & Saucer family comes with a heavy heart."

Perez expressed her deep gratitude to Cup & Saucer's past and present staff for helping the bakery "create all the delicious baked goods and specialty drinks," as well as to their cherished customers for their "support and generosity over these many years."

Loyal customers and residents have also taken to social media to express their gratitude and well wishes to Perez and the whole staff at Cup & Saucer, which has become a Hagåtña landmark.

Cup & Saucer's Bestseller Café at GPO, meanwhile, will remain open through June 30th, from 1-5:30 p.m. daily, Perez said. After that date, it will also permanently close.

It's just one of the businesses that have recently announced permanent closures. KD Toys at Micronesia Mall has also said it will be closing down and has been selling all its merchandise, from toys to electronics and watches, with deep discounts, along with store fixtures and equipment.

Over the past three years, Guam has seen the permanent closures of many longtime or popular businesses, mostly citing the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. These include Travel Pacificana in Hagåtña after 44 years in business, Java Junction coffee shop in Hagåtña, Tango Theatres at the Agana Shopping Center, Chuck E. Cheese's in Tamuning after 10 years, Poki Fry in Hagåtña, and Forever 21 in Tamuning, among others.
