International Museum of Dinnerware Design set to open in Kingston – Daily Freeman

International Museum of Dinnerware Design Director Margaret Carney discusses an exhibit featuring dinnerware from the Well of the Sea a well-known but now-shuttered seafood restaurant at the Sherman Hotel in Chicago where diners ate in dining rooms lit only with blacklights to create the impression that diners were undersea. The dinnerware sets were given to women who went to movies during the 1930s, Carney said. A new piece of the set was given weekly to women with their movie tickets and was intended to improve both the fortunes of dinnerware and increase movie ticket sales at a time when people tightened their belts in the midst of the Great Depression, she said.
