Houseware industry group says it knows what consumers want

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Now that people are back to more normal schedules and supply chain issues have fallen off, the Rosemont-based International Housewares Association offers a glimpse of what consumers want.

Peter Giannetti, the group's director of editorial, content and education, says they surveyed about 3,000 consumers to get a snapshot of what's important to them.

That includes keeping healthy, both physically and mentally; and saving time and space, while being environmentally and socially conscious.

Giannetti says if suppliers can meet more than one of those objectives they will be popular.

He sees growth in renting home goods, such as high-end cooking products and seasonal decor, as a way for consumers to try products they may eventually buy.

Continued remote work means many homes are crowded. The survey found three out of five people say they don't have enough space, so products that are small, stackable or multipurpose are appealing.

Four out of 5 people say they plan to host friends and family this year, and 35 percent said they’ll entertain at home more than last year.
