Indie coffee shop receives ‘huge victory’, Saline café being sold and other Washtenaw County business news

WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI -- Carrigan Café in Saline is officially on the market, an independent coffee shop has scored a small victory and the city's Nu2U Again has recently expanded its operations. These are just some businesses among several others making news in Washtenaw County.

‘A huge victory.’ Residents join forces to fight potential Starbucks drive-thru

After months of fighting against a potential Starbucks drive-thru being built across from her business, Kim Kaster is finally able to breathe a sigh of relief.

Kaster, owner of Brewed Awakenings Café just south of Ann Arbor in Pittsfield Township, is one of many people who have been speaking out against the idea of a Starbucks drive-thru coming to the Country Creek Village shopping center at 7025 E. Michigan Ave.

However, a recent decision from Pittsfield Township Planning Commission's May meeting is putting some of these concerned businesses and residents at ease.

Owners of Carrigan Café selling Saline business after 9 years

Carrigan Café in downtown Saline is officially on the market and open for prospective buyers.

Owners Karen and Jason Carrigan are selling the business after running it nine years. The couple opened the coffee shop at 101 S. Ann Arbor St. in September 2014 in the city's former My Favorite Café space.

Nu2U Again in Saline expands its operations while staying true to its mission

Nu2u Again Resale Shop provides not only a place to shop in Saline, but employment opportunities for disabled people in the area.

After more than four years in business, the shop recently expanded its storefront into the suite right next to its 1311 E. Michigan Ave. location.

The resale shop that began in 2018 runs solely on donations and sells clothing, electronics, houseware, jewelry, furniture, books, toys, crafts, sports equipment, decorations and CDs. Proceeds from the shop support and employ those with special needs in the area.

Vinology has been bringing wine, meals and its take on fine dining to downtown Ann Arbor since 2006.

The restaurant offers a variety of dinner options from its scratch kitchen along with brunch on certain days prepared in a kitchen led by Alex Young who is a James Beard Award recipient and the former chef for Zingerman's Roadhouse.

General Manager Thomas Kamrad said people looking to dine at Vinology can expect a friendly, more relaxed approach to fine dining and a menu packed with "wine-friendly world cuisine."

Live music, block parties coming to downtown Ann Arbor with A2 Summer Streets

A2 Summer Streets is returning to downtown Ann Arbor with live music, block parties and a bunch of activities.

The city's Main Street Area Association is hosting A2 Summer Streets from June 1 to Aug. 31 as a way to bring people to downtown businesses during street closures.

A2 Summer Events also is highlighting some Ann Arbor weekend brunch spots like Vinology, Avalon, Café Zola, TAQ, Roos Roast and Afternoon Delight. The event also features deals for other restaurants like Pretzel Bell, Cinnaholic and Bitty & Beau.
